The short version: Kru.ai uses Anthropic's Claude AI to read your uploaded invoices and produce the dashboards and recommendations you see. Your invoice data is sent to Anthropic's API, processed, and returned to us — Anthropic does not retain or train on your data. AI output can be wrong, so verify before acting on it.
1. What AI Does in Kru.ai
Kru.ai uses artificial intelligence at several specific points in the product:
- Document extraction. When you upload an invoice, receipt photo, PDF, or CSV, an AI model reads the document and extracts structured data — supplier name, products, quantities, prices, dates, totals. This is what populates your dashboard.
- Opportunity surfacing. AI helps us identify and phrase the savings opportunities you see (for example, "you've paid between $35 and $39 for carrots — standardizing to $35 saves about $8").
- Email digest summaries. Optionally, AI may write a short narrative paragraph summarizing your spend activity in periodic email digests. This feature can be turned off.
AI is not used to make decisions on your behalf, automatically contact suppliers, or send messages from your account.
2. Which AI Provider We Use
Kru.ai uses Anthropic's Claude AI, accessed via Anthropic's commercial API.
- Specifically, we use Claude Sonnet for document extraction and analysis, and Claude Haiku for shorter generation tasks like email digest summaries.
- Anthropic is a US-based AI safety company; data sent to Anthropic's API is governed by Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service.
- Per Anthropic's policy, customer inputs to the API are not used to train Anthropic's models.
We may change AI providers or models in the future to improve quality, lower cost, or address other operational needs. If we do, this disclosure will be updated.
3. What Data Is Sent to the AI Provider
The following may be sent to Anthropic's API:
- The contents of documents you upload (invoices, receipts, catalogs)
- Aggregated product, price, and supplier data derived from your invoices, for the purpose of generating opportunities or digest summaries
The following is not sent to the AI provider:
- Your name, email address, or account credentials
- Other users' data
- Your payment information (we do not currently collect payment information)
4. AI Output Can Be Wrong
AI systems are not perfect. The data extracted from your documents and the recommendations surfaced by Kru.ai may contain errors, including:
- Misread numbers (a "$5.49" mistaken for "$5.99")
- Misattributed suppliers or product names
- Missed line items, especially on low-quality scans or handwritten receipts
- Inaccurate calculations downstream of any extraction error
- Recommendations that don't account for context (contractual pricing, volume commitments, quality differences) that we don't have visibility into
The data Kru.ai shows you is informational, not authoritative. Always verify against your original invoices and use your own judgment before acting on a recommendation, contacting a supplier, or making a financial decision.
5. Your Data, Your Control
You can:
- Delete any invoice at any time from the Invoices page. Deletion removes the original file and all data extracted from it.
- Delete your account by contacting privacy@kru.ai. Account deletion removes all your invoices and extracted data within 30 days.
- Turn off the AI digest summary while keeping the rest of the digest. (This is currently set globally; per-user toggle is on our roadmap.)
- Export your data by request to privacy@kru.ai.
6. What We Do With AI-Processed Data
Once extracted, your structured invoice data is stored in our database and used to:
- Power your private dashboard, opportunities, and price comparisons
- Compute anonymized industry benchmarks (your individual data is never shown to other users)
- Improve Kru.ai's product quality (in aggregate; never in a way that exposes your data)
7. AI in Decisions That Affect You
Kru.ai does not use AI to make decisions that legally or significantly affect you. We do not use AI for:
- Pricing decisions about your account
- Approving or denying access to features
- Sharing your data with third parties
8. Security of AI Processing
All transmissions to and from Anthropic's API occur over TLS-encrypted connections. We do not log AI prompts containing your data in plain text outside of what is necessary for debugging immediate errors. We use Anthropic's API key authentication and follow their rate-limiting guidance.
9. Updates
This disclosure may be updated as we add new AI features, change providers, or refine how AI is used in the product. Material changes will be communicated via email or a notice in the product before they take effect.
